Subject
Description
Teachers Dora Lowery and Mrs. Dumich loading second graders from the Stuart Elementary School onto the Atlantic and Pacific train for a trip to Jensen Beach. According to the Stuart News (24 Mar 1949), the trip was given the name of "The Big Train Ride" and was the first time many of the students had been on a train. Each student had to take their 15 cents up to the ticket window and purchase their ticket themselves. Once the train arrived in Jensen Beach, the students then took a bus ride to visit second grade students at a school there before returning to Stuart via the bus. Mrs. Lowery continued to take her second graders on the trip every year (a total of 28 times).
