Description
Capt. Hugh Willoughby stands next to an automobile with Caroline Saul Smith and her young son, Merrill Sewall Smith. An unidentified person sits in the back of the automobile as well. Maxwell B. Smith (1881-1935) was one of the first people to settle in the Port Sewall area and was the nephew of the founder of Sewall's point, Capt. H. E. Sewall. After their wedding in 1911, Smith bought the building that housed the first Martin County post office and floated it on a barge down the Indian River from Sewall's Point to Port Sewall (1.4 miles) to become their home.
