Description
Murray Junior-Senior High School with several cars parked out front. The school (originally called Carver Junior-Senior High, also called Carver Training School and Murray Training School) replaced Stuart Training School in 1964. Murray High School was segregated, despite opening ten years after the Brown v. Board of Education ruling to desegregate schools. Prior to integrating the school, the school Superintendent, Thomas L. Crook appointed a new white Principal (Vincent Navitsky) to replace the black Principal (Walter Oden) who was well-respected by the student body. As a result of this decision, the student body went on strike and refused to attend classes for nine days. Murray High School was eventually integrated when it became the county-wide school for ninth graders in 1967.
