Item

Title

New Southern Methodist Church, 1907

Description

New Southern Methodist Church, Stuart, Florida, constructed at the corner of Albany Avenue and Second Street. Published in the Stuart News, 25th Historical Edition (9 Nov 1950) with the caption "The Florida Christian Advocation, Oct. 15, 1907 issue, tells the story of the pioneers who built the first Methodist Church here which was dedicated by Bishop Galloway in December of that year. The special east coast edition of the State church paper, which pictures the new church with a lengthy story of the development of the new frontier, was preserved by J.R. Pomeroy whose family loaned quite a collection of old papers to The News for this edition. The church was burned on New Years Day 1915 along with 26 other buildings in the block in Stuart's most disastrous fire. The present church was built on the site of the first one."
