Capt. Sewall's pineapple field, c. 1915

Item

Title

Capt. Sewall's pineapple field, c. 1915

Description

Small pineapple patch near small building. Published in the Stuart News (19 Mar 1959) with the caption: "A portion of Capt. Sewall's pineapple plantation is shown in this picture. It was located on Sewall's Point across from Port Sewall. The small house in the center apparently belonged to one of field hands. These photos will soon be given to the House of Refuge Museum by Mrs. Maxwell B. Smith Sr., who is the wife of one of the earliest settlers in the county. The pineapple plantation shown here was abandoned when Cuban fruit began to get preferential treatment in the northern markets. The big freeze in 1929 wiped out the pineapple industry completely in this section of Florida."
