Title
The McDonald building, 1916
Description
Published in the Stuart News (21 June 1970) with the caption: "This historic photograph shows the old J.B. McDonald Building and the McDonald home directly behind it, at Akron Avenue and 2nd Street, as they were rebuilt after the big fire New Year's Day, 1916. Now the Beyer Bldg. and the former residence of Mrs. Carl Gongaware, they will be demolished for expansion of Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Central Office."
Signs for businesses include a barber pole (probably for the 216 Barber Parlor), The Fashion Store (also called the Schwartz's Fashion Dry Goods Store - Shoes, Hats, Pants for Men and Boys), and Dr. D.M. Graham. Dr. David Maxwell Graham (1843-1923) was one of the first regular physicians in Stuart. He had a medical office in the McDonald Building of Stuart, in a room shared with the Geiger's Proprietary Drug Store. Moving in in November 1915, the building was unfortunately severely burnt on 1 Jan 1916. In September 1916, he moved again into the McDonald building, again sharing space with Geiger. He left Florida in 1920.
