Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, Historic Jensen and Eden on Florida's Indian River (p. 57), with the caption: "Douglas Austin and Betty Sorensen Austin, shown here sitting in front of two unidentified men, were active citizens working for the improvement of Jensen, Ft. Pierce and Okeechobee." Douglas E. Austin, Acacia masonic lodge master 1907-1910. Austin settled in Jensen Beach in about 1895 and became a pineapple farmer and realtor in Fort Pierce. His civic involvements include serving on the St. Lucie County Commission, heading the Improvement Club (which spearheaded getting roads paved), and organizing masonic lodges in Stuart and Okeechobee. He moved to Okeechobee (then called Tantie) in 1915, where he served as the second mayor. After moving back to St. Lucie County in 1922, he served on the North St. Lucie Drainage District Commission.
