Description
Photograph published in Stuart On the St. Lucie - A Pictorial History by Sandra Thurlow (p. 140) with the caption: "This aerial photograph taken October 31, 1956 shows how close East Stuart, the segregated African-American neighborhood, was to waterfront homes and public facilities restricted to Caucasians. Stuart Training School and Stuart's white schools were a short distance from each other, yet miles apart. Differences in the schools facilities are obvious. Children in East Stuart could see Stuart High School's ball field and gymnasium but had none of their own. Wetlands, the Florida East Coast Railway tracks and the absence of connecting roads, further separated white and black neighborhoods."
