Aerial over the House of Refuge at Gilbert's Bar, Hutchinson Island.
Published in the Stuart News (12 Jan 1956) with the caption: "Restored by Martin County Historical Society, the Hutchinson Island House of Refuge, landmark on this coast since the 1870s, will begin its new life as a museum and art gallery next Saturday and Sunday. A preview for society members is set for Saturday with formal public opening Sunday, and official dedication tentatively set for mid-February."
Photograph published in Gilbert's Bar House Of Refuge - Home Of History by Sandra Henderson Thurlow and Deanna Wintercorn Thurlow (p. 67) with the caption "This photograph, probably taken in 1956, shows the cyclone fence installed by William Cross for the county in 1955. The buildings have been repaired for museum use. When the museum opened, a pioneer kitchen and living room were set up in the 'Martin County Building' to the south of the main structure. It also housed the museum archives and library. The main building was used as an art gallery and the former boat house was used to display artwork of public school students."
