Roebuck farm, 1914

Item

Title

Roebuck farm, 1914

Description

Flock of chickens in the yard in front of a building or house. Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, Stuart on the St. Lucie (p. 126) with the caption: "When Arvilla Roebuck arrived at this rambling farmhouse south of Stuart with her husband William and seven children, she named it 'Hope.' The house belonged to Reuben Carlton and the names of the nearby hammock and creek reflected his ownership. With the passage of time, however, the names of the hammock and creek took on the Roebuck name. To find where the house named 'Hope' once stood, look on a modern map and note where Roebuck Creek nears Kanner Highway.
