Description

Phyllis Wheatley School.

The original school for Black children in Jensen Beach was split in 1928 to become South Jensen and Mars Hill schools. In 1933, the South Jensen school was dropped and a new school was built, the "Jensen Colored School." It was described as a new 3 room building, metal roof, painted inside and out, new sanitary buildings, well and drinking fountains, cost $8,800" (Stuart News 18 Sept 1934, p 3). It was renamed the "Phyllis Wheatley School" in 1944. In June 1950, this school was closed (Stuart News 24 May 1951) and the building was used for meetings until it was purchased by the American Legion Post 126 in 1954.
