Title

Dancer Chela Jacoba, 1962

Description

Published in the Stuart News (27 Oct 2013) with caption "Dance instructor Chela Jacobo and some of her young students in 1962 learning the techniques of dance."

Jacobo was a world renowned dancer and dance instructor. Originally from Bogota, Columbia, she moved to Texas after marrying an American businessman by the name of Dwayne C. Leschhorn. The couple moved to the Port Salerno area in the late 1950s and Jacobo opened a successful dance studio where she taught ballet and Spanish dance.

Students of Jacobo's studio performed many recitals in the area, the first being held in May 1958 at the Stuart Woman's Club. She also wrote and choregraphed several original ballets which were performed locally. She opened the Chela Jacobo Dance Academy at 1201 Colorado Avenue in August 1971. Jacobo continued to teach dance in Martin County until moving back to Columbia in 1977.
