Description
Louis A. Wehle (1889-1964) sits with his wife Elizabeth (1889-1972) on the edge of a pond in front of their winter home at Wehle Plantation. Louis A. Wehle, chairman of the board for Genesee Brewing Co. in Rochester, N. Y., purchased the former Mel Bar Farms land and built Wehle Plantation around 1952. The winter home and horse trotting track was located on 288 acres on Britt Road and at the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.
The Wehles donated the property to a Catholic Jesuit organization that according to the Stuart News (25 May 1966), used Wehle Plantation as the "...headquarters of Cuban nuns and girls who escaped Communist Cuba."
