According to the Stuart News (22 Jan 1953), the Florida Laryngectomees Association (FLA) held its second ever meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Dunscombe in St. Lucie Estates. Maj. C. S. "Spike" Maulsby served as the host for the event and described its purpose as follows "It was a gathering of folks who have had cancer and have learned to talk again. Our aim is to broadcast the good news nationally with hope to thousands who may be facing lost vocal cords. They can talk again."
