Description

Ten charter members of the Gamma Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., which was the first Black Greek-lettered sorority; it was chartered on the campus of Florida A&M College on May 14, 1932.

Photo features Mary Martin Dansby, Ruby Washington Anderson, Ida Lee Bradley, Susie McMeekin Britt, Edna Cross Burton, Ireta Martin Crosby, Ruth Bates Orr, Sue Kelker Russell, Beatrice Hill Stewart, Anita Prater Stewart.

Ida Lee Bradley Weeks (1910-2005) was the Jeanes teacher at Martin County Schools for the 1938-1939 and 1939-1940 school years. Jeanes Teachers were African-American supervisors of teachers in the rural south from 1908 to 1968 who worked in southern rural schools and communities. Jeanes teachers (formally called Jeanes supervising industrial teachers) worked toward improving the communities of schools.
