Item

Title

Kim Poy Lee with taro root, 1962

Description

Kim Poy Lee examines a cluster of taro root grown at his Sang Yick Farm in Hobe Sound. Lee immigrated to the U.S. with his family in the 1920s. With his brother, Lee established successful farming enterprises, both on Long Island (managed by his brother) and in Hobe Sound. Sang Yick Farm started at as a 300-acre plot to the west of Bridge Rd. (SR 708) in Hobe Sound but expanded to over 500 acres as it produced vegetables shipped to Chinese restaurants all over the country. The farm remained quite profitable until a devastating freeze in 1982 destroyed half of Lee's crops. In 1990, Lee retired from the farming business.
