Description

Newt Chase holds a fish by the tail.

Newton Fred Chase (1897-1984) briefly lived in Stuart before WWI, and returned in 1922. After volunteering with the Stuart police for some time, in 1925 he became a deputy under Martin County sheriff Bert Babcock and later served under Sheriff Marion McGee. After resigning in February 1927, he worked at farming and as a mechanic. He served as the county jailor from about 1939 to 1945, and as a Martin County deputy between 1945 to 1953. Between 1953 and 1955 he served as the Martin County Salt Water Conservation Agent for the State Dept. of Conservation, and ran unsuccessfully for sheriff of Martin County in 1955. In 1957, he joined the Stuart police and served until 1961, when he became a security guard at Grumman. His garden and fishing were featured in the Stuart News many times over the years.
