Item

Title

Kinsale, home of Patricia Murphy and James Kiernan, c. 1955

Description

Port Sewall home of Patricia Murphy and Capt. James E. Kiernan. Patricia Murphy was a well-known restaurateur who owned nine Candlelight Restaurants in New York and Ft. Lauderdale. The Kiernans purchased the 48-acre former estate of Samuel W. Traylor in the 1950s and named it Kinsale, after a village in Ireland as homage to Murphy's heritage. Murphy soon added expansive botanical and vegetable gardens, which grew award winning flowers and vegetables which supplied her restaurant empire. Her orchid greenhouses housed one of the largest collection of orchids in the country, at the time. After Patricia Murphy Kiernan’s death in 1979, the Kinsale property was broken up into several residential properties and the restaurants were all eventually closed.
