Historical Note:

Henry “Harry” Emerson Hill (1865–1937), originally from Canada, moved to Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1884. A decade later, in 1894, he and his wife Katherine Nelson Hill (1865–1932) relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Spruce Bluff on the north fork of the St. Lucie River. By 1898, they had moved to Fort Pierce, where Harry established an apiary, grew pineapples, and served as editor of The American Bee Keeper. In 1904, he founded the Florida Photographic Concern (FPC).

The business grew rapidly, with photographers A.T. Weaver and R. Lockwood Moss documenting major events such as the construction of the Florida East Coast (F.E.C.) Railway extension from Miami to Key West in 1906. FPC expanded its reach, opening a London office in 1909 and a Fort Pierce showroom later that year. By 1910, a two-story addition was constructed on their North Pine Street gallery.

FPC employed several photographers over the years, including J.M. Bonner and an individual known as Miller. Harry’s brother, Frederick Grant Hill (1882–1973), contributed as a photographer, photo finisher, and mechanic. Harry’s son, Lowell Gordon Hill (1894–1955), also worked as a photographer, eventually taking over the business when Harry retired around 1931. Lowell's wife, Merle Thompson Hill (1895–1969), served as manager and photo finisher, continuing to operate the business after Lowell's death in 1955 until around 1966.</text>

P 17-p 194 Columns of data. Generally includes a negative number, a short description of subject or person ordering, location, occasional remarks on subject or (rarely) date or size of print ordered, and the name or initials of the photographer. Contents vary significantly.

Earlier entries tend to have the subject described in the second field while entries recorded as between 1910 and 1912 record a name (assumed to be the person ordering the photo), and the subject is sometimes described in a column before the photographer’s initials. Early entries also are all in the same hand and a few photos are slightly out of chronological order, so these may have been entered at the same time, well after the negatives were made. Entries noted as “copyright date” probably have this phrase on the negative.

Negatives 14-499 have no information. Pages 75-76 missing, however, the negative numbering is continuous between pages 74 and 77, so this page must have been extracted before use. Page 35b has no numbers.

Locations: chiefly Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie, Stuart, Jensen, Gomez, Jupiter, Hobe Sound, and surrounding region. Other locations include Long Key, Okeechobee, Roseland, Palm Beach, Everglades, Eau Gallie, Georgiana, Indianola, Bassenger, Vero, and other Florida towns. A few negatives are associated with non-Florida locations.

Photographers: FGH or FH (Fred Hill); HEH or HH (Harry Hill); Lowell, LG, or LGH (Lowell Hill); Moss (R. Lockwood Moss), ATW (A.T. Weaver), JMB (J. M. Bonner), GWM, Conway, Miller

Section 3: Florida Photo Concern Private, page 195, Negatives 3371-3385. These numbers are also listed in section 2

Section 4: Alphabetical list of negatives. Within each letter of the alphabet, includes negative number, description (subject or person who ordered photo), location, and subject notes. Only two dates are given, and those are also given in section 2.
