  • Edna Coutant and her pioneer family moved to Potsdam (Stuart) in 1897. Coutant began teaching when she was around 13 years old. After retiring from teaching in 1947, Coutant also served as a librarian and ran the Woman's Club Public Library. She also played a role in planning and organizing Martin County's first Public Library.

    Published in the Stuart News (1 Jan 1953) with the caption: "Mrs. Edna Coutant, now in her third year as librarian at the Martin County Public Library here, stamps an outgoing book at her desk in the Stuart Woman's Club building."
