He enlisted in the Army Air Corps to fight in World War I. While serving in the 22nd Aero Squadron, he was awarded the Silver Star and a citation for valor by General Pershing after shooting down at least four German planes during the Mihiel offensive. &#13;
&#13;
Tyndall later served as a test pilot for the military. He died during a flight from Langley Field in Virginia to Kelly Field in Texas after his plane got lost in the fog and ran out of fuel. Tyndall Field (later Tyndall Air Force Base) was named in his honor.</text>
