"Hornet" sailboat, 1902
Sailboat with the name "Hornet" in dry storage. One man onboard and two men stand next to the boat. Capt. Hugh Willoughby identified as the man on the right. Written on the back of the photo: "The good ship 'Hornet' on which Clayton G. Dixon & Mrs. E. W. D. (Estelle Willoughby Dixon) spent six weeks the winter of 1902 -- A sixteen year old boy as deck hand, Mrs. C. G. D. -- as cook -- & navigator -- sailing from Cocoanut (sic) Grove to New River Inlet thru canal & mostly poling." -
Ponce de Leon landing Anniversary, c. 1890
Large crowd stands under umbrellas watching a church service or other ceremony in commemoration of Ponce de Leon landing in Florida in 1513. The celebration was first held in 1883 for the 370th anniversary and continued to be held in St. Augustine annually for many years staring around 1900. -
Casa Monica Hotel, c. 1890
View of the Casa Monica Hotel and city street in St. Augustine, Florida. Frank W. Smith opened the Casa Monica Hotel in 1888 using Moorish Revival and Spanish Baroque Revival architecture. Henry Flagler purchased the hotel shortly after it opened and renamed it the Cordova Hotel. In 1902, Flagler merged the Cordova Hotel with his Alcazar Hotel via a bridge and renamed it the Alcazar Annex. After the Great Depression, the Alcazar Annex was in disrepair and sat empty for 30 years until it was renovated to become the St. John's County Courthouse in 1968. Richard Kessler purchased the property in the 1990s and after renovations turned it back into a hotel, becoming the Casa Monica Resort & Spa still in business today. -
Villa Zorayda, c. 1900
Front view of the Villa Zorayda house located in St. Augustine, Florida. Frank W. Smith built this Moorish Revival style winter home in 1883. In the early 1900s, the building became a restaurant and social club and later during the 1920s, it was turned into a casino and speakeasy. Abraham Mussallem also used the building as a home before turning it into a museum in 1933. -
