  • Henry Newton Gaines (1858-1928) convinced a friend in Kansas, J.R. Greenless, to buy about 5,000 acres, to be developed as Tropical Farms, Gaines built a model farm and sold lots. He was the first chairman of the Board of County Commissioners (1925).

  • Henry Newton Gaines (1858-1928) arrived in Stuart from Kansas in 1912. After convincing a Kansas friend, J.R. Greenless, to buy about 5,000 acres to be developed as Tropical Farms, Gaines built a model farm and sold lots. He was the first chairman of the Board of County Commissioners (1925).
