Stuart High School gymnasium, c. 1936
The Stuart High School gymnasium was constructed in 1934 through intermittent funding from the Civil Works Administration (CWA), Public Works Administration (PWA), and Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA). Measuring 70 feet wide by 100 feet long, the gym seated approximately 400 spectators and was considered well lit for its time when it opened in August 1934. In addition to school athletics, the building served as a venue for community events. By 1958, frequent complaints arose regarding inadequate seating, limited dressing rooms, and the gym’s ongoing need for repairs. After Stuart High School relocated in 1964, the gymnasium was transferred to Stuart Middle School, where it remained in use until shortly before its demolition in August 1973.
