Portrait of Lanley Kitching, 1893
Langley Kitching (1835-1910), brother to Stuart pioneers Walter, Broster and Sylvanus Kitching. An explorer and botanist, Langley kept meticulous journals, including his observations of flora, during his travels visiting Society of Friends missionaries in South Africa and Madagascar.

Glass brothers, c. 1898

Charles Glass came to the area and worked as a pineapple farm in the early 1900s. In 1912, he began running the Stuart Hotel. Glass had two brothers, Louis Glass (1854-1929) and Frank Glass (1875-1958).

Charles and Edith Glass, c. 1930
Portrait of Charles and Edith Glass. Glass was one of the earliest pineapple farmers in the area. In 1905, Charles Glass married Edith Kitching, daughter of Sylvanus and Martha Kitching, and the couple managed and operated the Stuart Hotel from 1912 to 1925.
