The first person to sign the guest registry was Governor John Martin, in Stuart for the celebration of the creation of Martin County. The hotel was redecorated and a pier was added and a second "grand opening" occurred in November 1929 as the "Pelican Hotel" under the management of Drew King. King's son William King assumed management after Drew's death in 1944, and was the manager and owner until his death in 1968. The hotel hosted many beauty pageants, weddings, and other community events. After being sold in 1969, the Pelican Hotel continued, although its business steadily declined. In the 1980s, it became the law offices of Gary, Williams, Lewis and Watson, as Water Side Place.
