S. S. Florida, c. 1952
The S. S. Florida, a steamship, operated by the Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company (P.& O.).
The ship was built in 1931 and served as a steam liner from Florida to Havana, Cuba. It was used by the military during World War II and after the war it was converted into a cruise liner that ran from Miami to Havana during the 1950s. Around 1959, During the height of the Cuban Revolution, the S.S. Florida's route was reassigned from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas. The cruise ship was retired from service in 1966 but then served as a hotel ship called the La Palais Flotant for the 1967 World's Fair in Montreal, Canada. After the World's Fair it was broken down and used for parts. -
