Miss Harris' Florida School, c. 1950
Miss Julia F. Harris (1878-1977) came to Florida in about 1911 and first operated a school in Miami. She moved to Palm City and opened a school there after her uncle and aunt died and left her 15 acres just north of Pelican Cove. The 10,000 square foot residential girls' school and dormitory opened in 1957. The school offered a challenging curriculum including Latin and sciences. Harris ran the school until 1970, when it was sold to Earle R. Hackett and continued as the Harris-Stuart School, becoming co-ed in 1971. In 1972 the school was sold to William J. Matheson and in 1974 sold to Charles F. Chapman School of Seamanship and Maritime Arts, which remained at the site for several years.
