The Leighton family with a pig and chickens. Rose Sheriff Leighton (1892-1987), children Jean Elizabeth Leighton Ludlum (1915-1994) and Charles William Leighton (1913-1980), and father Charles William Leighton (1884-1944) holding another child. Published in the Stuart News (5 June 1983). The Leightons moved from Pittsburgh to Palm City in 1914, having bought 20 acres, sight unseen, from Charles Chillingworth and the Palm Beach Land Company.
On other side of railroad tracks stands George W. Parks general merchandise store (in 2023 Stuart Heritage Museum), built in 1901, which changed its name to Stuart Mercantile in 1913. Living quarters above were built with an open veranda and enclosed, as in this photo, in 1910.
