John W. Stokes moved to Stuart with his wife, Mary Loleen Stokes in the mid-1930s. Mr. Stokes created the John W. Stokes Foundation in 1947, which was a major contributor to the building of the Martin County public library, Martin Memorial Hospital, and granted scholarships to many high school seniors in the area.
Austin H. Kiplinger worked as a professional journalist for many years and later took over the Kiplinger Washington Editors, Inc. after his father's death in 1967. Austin Kiplinger ran the publishing company founded by his father, Willard Kiplinger, for nearly 35 years. Austin Kiplinger also continued the charitable work of his father through the Kiplinger Foundation. The Kiplinger Foundation provided funding for many Martin County projects such as renovating the Stuart Feed Store, which later became the Stuart Heritage Museum.
