During WWI, the American Red Cross led a program, "Knit Your Bit," which encouraged women to knit for soldiers. Flora Frazier Dyer (1878-1937) photographed her 3 year old daughter, Virginia, knitting and enclosed the photo and a note along with the knitted items for a soldier. The story is that the photograph was used in publicity instead of being sent to a soldier.
