Child with banana bunch, c. 1936
Young black boy poses next to a bunch of bananas on a tree. Racist caption on back of postcard reads "The banana is not a fruit of a tree but of a giant herb, which, in the tropics, attains the height of 40 feet and leaves of a foot wide and 6 to 10 feet long. A large flower bud of small, purple flowers appears, each flower developing into a small banana pointing upward. Fully as popular with the small darkie as the watermelon wine, the banana coaxes a smile from the little black boy, who pokes his kinky head through a large leaf." -
