Young black boy poses next to a bunch of bananas on a tree. Racist caption on back of postcard reads "The banana is not a fruit of a tree but of a giant herb, which, in the tropics, attains the height of 40 feet and leaves of a foot wide and 6 to 10 feet long. A large flower bud of small, purple flowers appears, each flower developing into a small banana pointing upward. Fully as popular with the small darkie as the watermelon wine, the banana coaxes a smile from the little black boy, who pokes his kinky head through a large leaf." -

Spicer's Grove banana tree near Salerno, c. 1915
Banana tree. Spicer Grove was established in about 1917 by Edward E. Spicer, and was located in the Gomez Tract adjoining Hobe Sound. In 1924 it was noted as being the finest grove in Florida.
