  • Studio portrait of Frances C. King. Born Frances Carlberg in West Palm Beach, she suffered an early fall which led to a total loss of hearing. After attending the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Massachusetts, Carlberg graduated from Palm Beach High School and went on to Bethany College (Lindsborg, Kansas), where she studied art. When visiting Sewall's Point with her parents in 1946, she met and later married Drew W. King, Stuart mayor (1949-1951), realtor and owner of the Pelican Hotel and Stuart Hardware Co.

    Frances C. King continued to paint and advocate for the deaf community throughout her life and during her 51 years as a Stuart resident. Her art was exhibited all over the country and she served as an active member of the Oral Deaf Adult Section of the Alexander Graham Bell Association.
