Albert B. Chandler 1903
In 1960s, documents were found in the attic of recently deceased Mary Chandler, Salerno, concerning espionage and other activities during the U.S. Civil War. The documents belonged to Albert B. Chandler (1840-1923) who developed and ciphers for transmitting confidential messages as the confidential telegrapher for Lincoln. Mary Chandler's husband, Frank Chandler was A.B. Chandler's nephew, but it is unknown how they came to have possession of the papers or where they were located after 1960. Photo from Hiram Carleton, Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont, Volume II. Lewis Publishing Company (New York, NY), 1903. Facing page 328. -
