Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, Stuart on the St. Lucie (p. 107), with the caption: "Temperance leader Cynthia Burnette and widower Dr. Horace John Haney were married in 1897 and lived on the north side of the St. Lucie River until their divorce in 1903. Cynthia moved across the river and became one of Stuart's most celebrated citizens."
Agatha Kickliter Thomas (1876-1937) taught school after arriving in Rio in 1901. She was a charter member of the Stuart Woman's Club, the PEO Sisterhood, and the Baptist Missionary Society. Her brother, Lacy Kickliter, was the first elected tax collector of Martin County.
