Higbee Go Cart Collection
Title
Higbee Go Cart Collection
Description
Collection of photographs featuring midget cars or go carts, races, and drivers.
Historical note:
A racing track for midget cars or go carts opened on 8 January 1960, originally named the Higbee Midget Speedway. Within a month, it was renamed the Martin County Midget Speedway. Built by Ed and Lee Higbee, the track was located on A1A/Old Dixie Highway south of Stuart. Soon after, a local midget racing club—the Martin County Pop-sters—was formed, with Bernard Coker as president, Alan Decker as vice president, and Ray Mancil as secretary-treasurer. Board members included Ed, Ernie, and Lee Higbee, along with Glen Ulmer.
Well-built and quickly recognized, the track hosted the state’s midget championship races from July 15–17, 1960.
By August 1961, however, the “Martin County Midget Speedway” no longer advertised events. The Pop-sters continued to organize races for go carts for another year, promoting them instead at the Fairgrounds or at the Old Dixie/A1A Golden Gate track.
