Building Bridges Oral History Project
Description
Martin County Black Heritage Initiatives is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose purpose is to uncover, share and preserve the stories of the challenges, achievements and contributions of Black Americans in shaping Martin County during its formative years and into the distinct community it is today. Their long-term vision is to improve race relations in the community and build a shared legacy through historic preservation and education.
They have conducted several oral history projects, including:
-Black Educators of Martin County
-Black Pioneers of Martin County
-Salerno Colored Schoolhouse
-Stuart Training School
Many of these are part of the Building Bridges Project, a collaboration between the University of Florida’s Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. These oral histories have been posted on the University of Florida’s Samuel Proctor Oral History database, without content detail. These records primarily link to those records; others are linked to their records on archive.org.
